When a Second Opinion Can Help

Common Reasons Patients Ask Us for Another Look

A Large or Unexpected Treatment Plan

Your plan involves several teeth, multiple crowns or a significant estimate. We can help you understand which items are urgent, which can be phased over time and whether simpler options are suitable.

Treatment Recommended Without Symptoms

You feel fine but were told you need work done. Some early problems can be present without pain, and others can be safely monitored. We show you what we see so you can understand the reasoning.

Conflicting Advice or Several Options

Deciding between a filling and a crown, saving a tooth or replacing it, or an implant and a bridge? We explain the benefits, limitations, expected lifespan and ongoing care of each option.

Preserving Healthy Tooth Structure

Our approach is conservative. Where it is suitable, we consider options that keep more of your natural tooth and discuss when monitoring may be a reasonable choice.

Questions That Were Not Fully Answered

If the reasons for treatment were unclear, or you felt rushed, we take time to walk through your X-rays and clinical photos and answer your questions in plain language.

Planning Your Appointment

How Long Does a Dental Second Opinion Take, and What Does It Cost?

Usually around 40 minutes · Fees depend on the assessment needed

An examination fee applies. Any additional X-rays are charged separately. Tell us what treatment was proposed when you book so we can discuss the expected scope, timing and fees.

We usually request suitable existing X-rays from your previous dental office, with your authorization. Sometimes updated or additional images are needed for an accurate assessment; we explain these needs and the anticipated charges.

At the appointment, we discuss our findings and suitable options. If treatment is proposed, we provide a written treatment estimate.

For help understanding fees, see our BCDA fee guide and dental cost examples. For direct billing, non-assignment plans and benefit estimates, visit insurance and payment options.

Your Second Opinion Visit

What to Expect, Step by Step

  1. Tell us about your concern when you book

Let our team know you are booking a second opinion and which treatment was proposed. We can help request your records and X-rays from your current clinic, with your authorization.

  2. We review your history and existing plan

Dr. Bae reviews your dental and medical history, your treatment proposal and estimate, and any X-rays or records you have provided.

  3. An examination of your teeth, gums and bite

We examine the areas in question and your overall oral health. If existing X-rays are recent and clear, we use them where possible. Additional images are taken only when needed for an accurate assessment.

  4. We explain what we see

Using clinical photos and digital X-rays, we show you our findings and explain whether we agree with the original recommendations, and why.

  5. We discuss your options and provide a treatment estimate

We outline suitable options, including monitoring where appropriate, their trade-offs and a suggested order of care. If you choose treatment with us, we provide an estimate and can submit a predetermination to your insurer.

Preparing for Your Appointment

Get the Most From Your Second Opinion

A little preparation helps us give you a more complete and accurate assessment, and can reduce the need for repeat X-rays.

What to bring

  • Your written treatment plan and cost estimate
  • Recent X-rays, or your authorization for us to request them
  • Your dental insurance or CDCP details
  • A list of current medications and health conditions
  • Notes on any symptoms: when they started and what triggers them

Questions worth asking about any treatment plan

  • What is the diagnosis for each tooth, and can you show me?
  • What happens if I wait or choose not to treat it?
  • What are the alternatives, and how do they compare?
  • How long is each option expected to last?
  • Which treatment is most urgent, and can the rest be phased?

Do not wait if it may be urgent. Contact a dentist promptly for facial swelling, fever or severe or worsening pain. Call 911 for severe breathing difficulty or signs of a life-threatening emergency. See our emergency dental care or call 604-681-6699.

Second Opinions, Treatment Plans & Options

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a dental second opinion?

A dental second opinion is an independent assessment by another dentist of a diagnosis or treatment plan you have already received. The second dentist examines your teeth, reviews your existing records and X-rays, and explains whether they agree with the findings, what options are available and which treatment is most urgent. At Coastal City Dunsmuir Dental Centre, Dr. Tony Bae provides second opinions for crowns, implants, root canals, fillings, gum treatment, Invisalign and cosmetic dentistry.

When should I get a second opinion on a dental treatment plan?

Consider a second opinion when a plan involves several teeth or a large estimate, when you were told you need treatment but have no symptoms, when you received different advice from different dentists, or when you are deciding between options such as a crown or a filling, or an implant or a bridge. A second opinion is also useful if the reasons for treatment were not clearly explained to you.

Do I need a referral or permission from my current dentist?

You do not need a referral or permission from your current dentist to book a second opinion. You can request copies of your records and X-rays from your current clinic, or authorize us to request them for you. A copying or transfer fee may apply at some clinics.

Does dental insurance cover a second opinion?

Many dental insurance plans cover some or all of an examination, but coverage depends on your plan, how often you have had an exam and whether new X-rays are needed. We offer direct billing to many plans, accept eligible patients enrolled in the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), and explain estimated fees and your expected portion before your visit. We can also submit a predetermination to your insurer before any recommended treatment. Read about CDCP at our clinic.

What should a dental treatment plan include?

A clear dental treatment plan should state the diagnosis for each tooth, the recommended procedure, the reason it is needed, reasonable alternatives including monitoring or no treatment, the risks and expected lifespan of each option, the suggested order and timing of treatment, and an itemized cost estimate. If any of these are missing, ask your dentist to explain them before you agree to treatment.

How do I compare different dental treatment options?

Compare dental treatment options by asking how much healthy tooth structure each one removes, how long it is expected to last, what maintenance it needs, how it affects neighbouring teeth, the total cost over time and what happens if you wait. For example, a filling preserves more tooth than a crown but may not be strong enough for a badly cracked tooth, and an implant replaces a missing tooth without altering neighbouring teeth, unlike a traditional bridge.

Is it safe to delay dental treatment while I get a second opinion?

Ask your treating dentist how promptly the recommended treatment should be completed. Whether it is appropriate to wait depends on the diagnosis and your individual circumstances. Do not delay urgent assessment for facial swelling, fever, severe or worsening pain, persistent bleeding or difficulty swallowing. Call 911 for severe breathing difficulty or signs of a life-threatening emergency. If you are unsure about the timing of dental care, contact your dentist or our team.

What happens if the second opinion is different from the first?

Different opinions are common because dentists may weigh the same findings differently, especially for borderline issues. We explain the reasons behind our assessment, show you what we see on clinical photos and X-rays, and outline the trade-offs of each option. You can then choose the approach that fits your priorities, whether you have treatment with us or return to your current dentist.
